WMSC Skills Development Program
For U8 (2003), U9 (2002) and U10 (2001) Age Groups
Background
The Canadian Soccer Association (CSA) identified the ages between 8 and 12 as the key years for acquiring basic skills required for later play. Waterloo Minor Soccer strives to provide programs for all players registered in the club’s programs and leagues that help to develop skills and a better understanding of soccer.
The WMSC Skills Development Program has been designed to provide an environment for younger age groups – U8 through U10 – that stresses skill development and potential opportunity for additional competitive experiences intended to enhance this skill instruction.
Skills Development Program
Program Details:
For 20 weeks commencing October 13, 2010 and finishing April 1, 2011, players meet once a week at Bechtel Park’s indoor facility for instruction on the basic skills required in recreational and competitive soccer. The skill development sessions are 1.5 hours in length and are conducted by Club Coaches, qualified instructors and rep level coaches.

U9 (born in 2002) – Wednesday evenings
U10 (born in 2001) – Friday evenings
Start times will alternate weekly between 6pm and 7:30pm. Players will be assigned to a session on the night applicable to their age group.
Cost and Registration:
$250 charged for 20 sessions. Full program fees are payable upon registration.
Registration forms are available for download here (Word format and PDF format) and are also available at the Waterloo Minor Soccer Office.
Space is limited so register early to avoid disappointment.
Advanced Recreational Opportunities in 2011:
Summer soccer reinforces skill instruction. Players participating in the Skills Development Program may choose to try out for their age group’s 2011 Development travel team that participates in the Southwest Regional Soccer League (outside the WMSC house league), a tournament team or register with the WMS house league program to enhance their skill development. Teams are expressly formed so players can apply the skills they’ve learned within a competitive environment.
Tryouts for the 2011 U9 Development teams will be held in early January 2011.
Tryouts for the 2011 U10 Development teams will be held on September 25/26 and October 2/3, 2010. Players trying out for a U10 team in the fall are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Skills Development Program for their age group to advance the development of soccer skills required later when playing at a competitive level.
The decision on team placement is based upon the best situation for each individual player’s skill development.
